This high-altitude alpine experience is designed for those who want to sharpen their exposed camping skills while enjoying some of the most spectacular views in Wyoming. A fast-paced, pack-loaded ascent to the summit of Medicine Bow Peak provides an outstanding opportunity to train physically, mentally, and technically in a real mountain environment.
Camping above 12,000 feet offers a true alpine immersion, with unforgettable sunsets and Wyoming’s legendary dark night skies.
This alpine outing takes us to the summit of Medicine Bow Peak, where we will establish camp above 12,000 feet. Our approach begins at Lewis Lake, in the heart of the Medicine Bow Range.
We depart from Laramie and, after approximately one hour of driving, arrive at the Lewis Lake trailhead to prepare for our adventure. Following a technical briefing and gear check, we begin our ascent toward the summit of Medicine Bow Peak with full packs.
Upon reaching our high camp, we set up tents and break for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll explore nearby Heart Lake on the west side of the range, taking in the alpine landscape and terrain.
Back at camp, the real learning begins. We’ll cover practical mountain skills such as:
Tent setup for high winds
Efficient alpine cooking systems
Gear organization and management
High-altitude safety considerations
After a solid mountain breakfast the following morning, we hike back to the vehicles. If weather and timing allow, we can enjoy the lakes with kayaks or paddleboards before returning to Laramie.
This is more than a hike — it’s a hands-on alpine training experience designed to build confidence, resilience, and mountain competence in a stunning Wyoming setting.
