Experience one of Wyoming’s most iconic summits on a full-value alpine loop around Laramie Peak — the highest point in the southern Laramie Range and a true landmark of the High Plains.
This is a big-sky mountain experience combining steady elevation gain, panoramic ridgelines, granite outcrops, and expansive summit views stretching across eastern Wyoming.
Designed for hikers seeking a rewarding summit objective, this moderately challenging loop is ideal for experienced hikers, adventurous travelers, and strong families ready for a full-day mountain effort. Along the way, we integrate mountain travel strategy, pacing, navigation skills, and insights into Wyoming’s unique high-elevation ecosystems.
This experience takes place in the Laramie Peak area within the Medicine Bow National Forest, about 1.5 hours from Laramie.
Unlike the alpine lakes of the Snowy Range, Laramie Peak offers a different Wyoming landscape: rolling forest, exposed granite slabs, wind-shaped trees, and vast views over the plains below.
The trailhead provides solid access, but due to its popularity during peak season, we coordinate logistics carefully and encourage carpooling when possible to minimize environmental impact.
Morning – Forest Approach & Ridge Gain
We begin with a steady ascent through pine forest, gradually transitioning to more open terrain. As we gain elevation, granite formations begin to dominate the landscape.
Throughout the climb, we cover:
Efficient uphill pacing techniques
Route selection in rocky terrain
Reading terrain features for navigation
Midday – Summit of Laramie Peak
Reaching the summit is a true Wyoming moment. From the top of Laramie Peak, views stretch across the plains to the east and deep into the mountain ranges to the west. We take time for photos, rest, and a well-earned lunch.
Afternoon – Completing the Loop
Rather than simply retracing our steps, we descend via a loop variation, offering new perspectives and terrain. The descent focuses on safe downhill movement techniques and energy management to finish strong.
Because this is a remote mountain environment, guides carry satellite communication devices (Garmin inReach), emergency supplies, and extra food. Weather exposure and altitude are carefully managed with conservative pacing and constant group assessment.
If you’re looking to stand on a true Wyoming summit, experience wide-open mountain terrain, and challenge yourself on a classic peak objective — the Laramie Peak Loop is your adventure.
