Discover one of the most scenic alpine circuits in southern Wyoming. The Circle of Lakes is a full-day, 11.3-mile loop that wraps around Browns Peak in the heart of the Snowy Range — a landscape defined by granite formations, crystal-clear lakes, and wide-open alpine tundra.
This is more than a hike — it’s a mountain immersion experience.
Designed for hikers who want distance, variety, and depth, this moderately challenging loop takes you through constantly changing terrain: forested sections, exposed ridgelines, lake basins, and sweeping summit views. Along the way, you’ll learn practical backcountry navigation skills and gain a deeper understanding of fragile alpine ecosystems.
Perfect for experienced hikers, adventurous families, groups of friends, and travelers looking to explore beyond the typical tourist trail.
OThis adventure takes place in Medicine Bow National Forest, just outside Laramie.
We begin at Lewis Lake Trailhead and complete a full loop around Browns Peak, traveling through one of the most lake-dense alpine zones in the region.
Depending on parking conditions, access may also be coordinated near Brooklyn Lake. Whenever possible, we organize carpooling from Laramie to minimize environmental impact and parking congestion.
Expect classic Wyoming high-country scenery: glacial lakes, polished granite, subalpine forest, and open tundra shaped by wind and weather.
Morning – Into the Lakes Basin (5–6 miles)
We set off from Lewis Lake, hiking north around Browns Peak. The trail gradually reveals a chain of alpine lakes framed by granite outcrops and expansive views.
Midday – Lakeside Break
We pause for lunch beside one of the alpine lakes — time to recharge, refuel, and soak in the silence of the high country.
Afternoon – Completing the Loop (5–6 miles)
The southern section of the circuit offers new angles of the peak, open terrain, and sweeping views before returning to the trailhead.
Because this route travels a significant distance with limited exit options behind the peak, safety is a priority. Guides carry satellite communication (Garmin inReach), emergency overnight equipment, and extra supplies. In the rare event of a serious emergency, coordination with local Search & Rescue ensures a structured response plan.
If you're looking for a true Wyoming alpine experience — long mileage, real mountain terrain, and meaningful learning — the Circle of Lakes delivers.
